Vivement Dimanche est le dernier long métrage de François Truffaut adapté d'un roman de Charles Williams intitulé The Long Saturday Night et paru en 1962. Ce film noir est un hommage appuyé au cinéaste Alfred Hitchcock, dont François Truffaut se réclame comme l'un des plus grands fans. Vivement dimanche marque la seconde collaboration entre François Truffaut et Fanny Ardant, deux ans après La Femme d'à côté. La comédienne deviendra la femme du cinéaste. En 1984, Vivement dimanche a été nommé dans deux catégories lors de la cérémonie des César : celle de la Meilleure actrice pour Fanny Ardant, et celle du Meilleur réalisateur pour François Truffaut.
